The first annual Fraser Valley Traditional Karate Invitational was held Saturday at Abbotsford Traditional Secondary.

The event drew 120 athletes from across the province, and featured some impressive performances from local athletes.

"The tournament was really successful," said sensei Harry Sidhu of the Abbotsford Shotokan Karate Dojo, which co-hosted the event with Valley Shidokan Karate of Chilliwack.

"We're going to do it again next year, and we expect it to be even bigger. We'll have a full year to plan it, and we learned a lot."

The tournament also had a charitable component, and organizers donated their $500 profit from concessions, sponsorship and ticketing back to the leadership group at Abbotsford Traditional Secondary.
