The Provincial Jump Rope Championships are leaping to Abbotsford starting on Friday.

The Abbotsford Skipping Sensations host the event, which runs from Friday to Sunday at Rick Hansen Secondary.

The event was originally planned to take place at Robert Bateman Secondary, but Elections BC advance polling stations set up at that school bumped the event.

Opening Ceremonies are on Friday at 6:30 p.m, with the competition running on Saturday and Sunday from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Saturday will be all team events (team/double dutch freestyle, and team speed events), while Sunday will be all individual events (freestyle and individual speed events).

The event will see over 100 athletes from around the province battle it out.

Admission is free for all spectators, and there will be a concession and raffle items.

In other Abbotsford Skipping Sensations news, head coach Deirdre DeGagne was honoured in a big way in March.

DeGagne was recognized as one of the most influential women in sport, in the coaching category of the awards, by the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in sport.

DeGagne has dedicated 27 years to the team as head coach, and extends her leadership annually as co-coach of Team BC at the National Championships, and Team Canada at international competitions.

She also holds positions on both the Rope Skipping Canada and Jump Rope BC Boards.

DeGagne was inducted in the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 in the community builder category and received the Order of Abbotsford for her decades of community involvement.

She also was a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her service to the community.

Under DeGagne’s leadership, Abbotsford has become a national hot spot for the sport.

The club performs as a Jump Rope for Heart demonstration team and represented Abbotsford with demonstrations at events including the 2010 Winter Olympics and last year’s B.C. Summer Games.
