One night after a dramatic third-period rally saw them score twice in the final 80 seconds to force overtime and earn a single point in a 5-4 loss, the Vancouver Giants had little magic left, mustering just a dozen shots in a 3-0 defeat.
Both games were against the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday and Sunday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum and dropped Vancouver’s record to 19-44-3-3.
In the first contest on Friday, the Giants’ Jordan Wharrie and Jordan Borstmayer scored goals 38 seconds apart to erase a 4-2 deficit before Ryan Hughes got the overtime winner for the Winterhawks 1:44 into three-on-three hockey.
Ty Ronning and Jack Flaman had Vancouver’s other goals, erasing a 1-0 deficit when they scored 51 seconds apart in the middle frame.
Both players finished the game with two points apiece.
Keegan Iverson, Skyler McKenzie, Brad Ginnell and Matt Revel had Portland’s other goals.
Ryan Kubic made 37 saves in the loss.
The teams again hit the ice on Saturday with the Winterhawks throwing 39 pucks on goal, 36 of which were turned aside by David Tendeck.
The Giants, on the other hand, mustered just a meagre dozen shots on goal.
Cody Glass, Joachim Blichfeld and Hughes scored for Portland.
The Giants are back in action this weekend with games on Friday in Kelowna and Saturday in Kamloops.
Vancouver’s next home game is March 14 when the Victoria Royals visit the Langley Events Centre.
The Giants are teaming up with the Kidney Foundation of Canada for Don Cherry Night for that game.
