FV Royals capture AA championship title

The Fraser Valley Royals won the Mainland International Hockey Championship.

The 2000 Fraser Valley Royals have won the AA division of the Mainland International Hockey Championship in Coquitlam this past weekend.

They went a perfect 6-0 through the competition and defeated the Edgy Islanders of Victoria 4-2 to take home the championship. The Royals were down on the scoreboard 2-1 heading into the third period but  a huge tying goal from Abbotsford’s Jake Enns evened the game at two.

Minutes later Mission’s Sean Sidhu got the eventual game winner when he wired home a slap shot to put the Royals up 3-2. Enns sealed the victory with his second goal of the game, 4-2. The 2000 Royals top three point getters were Abbotsford’s Brett Bass with nine goals three assists, Mission’s Hayden Vetterals, five goals, five assists, Maple Ridge’s Jacob Mainhout, four goals, three assists.

The Royals are coached by Troy Stordy, Scott Penman, Jeff Penman and Ken McPhalen.

The 2000 Fraser Valley Royals Black, coached by Colin Rissanen, came home with a silver medal after losing a close game to the Vancouver Spartans in BC Cup Final at the Mainland Tournament.

The 1999 Fraser Valley Royals were the top AA program in the Mainland finishing fourth behind three top AAA programs (West Coast Warriors, Vancouver Venom and BC Outlaws) in the 1999 AAA/AA division.

They had solid victories over the Abbotsford AAA Jr Heat, Vancouver Island Monarchs and only suffered losses to the West Coast Warriors.

The Fraser Valley Royals team are comprised of kids from Aldergrove, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission and Maple Ridge, Langley and Surrey.

They are a non-profit development program that strives on excellence.
