Finalists set for Championship Saturday at Abbotsford PD City Basketball Tournament

The majority of Championship Saturday (Dec. 10) is set at the annual AbbyPD City Basketball Tournament.

The 12th edition will once again see fans pack Columbia Bible College’s Columbia Place gym for a day full of action.

The seniors are always the main event of the evening and this year will feature the W.J. Mouat Hawks and the Abbotsford Panthers battle it out in the senior boys final. It’s a rematch of the 2018 tournament final that saw the Hawks edge the Panthers 96-95 in a thrilling game.

The Hawks opened with a 68-49 win over the Bateman Timberwolves on Tuesday (Dec. 6) and then downed the MEI Eagles 76-64 on Wednesday (Dec. 7). The Panthers defeated the Dasmesh Falcons 108-28 on Tuesday and then beat the Hansen Hurricanes 101-37 on Wednesday.

Mouat and Abby Senior are scheduled to tip-off at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Mouat is looking to repeat as city champions. The Panthers last won the senior boys division in 2019.

The senior girls final will see the Panthers take on the Yale Lions. The schools also met in the 2019 senior girls tournament final, with Abbotsford posting a 73-62 win.

Yale beat Hansen 82-47 on Tuesday and defeated the Abbotsford Traditional Titans 84-37 on Wednesday. Abbotsford earned an 81-30 win over Mouat on Tuesday and then defeated MEI 80-38 on Wednesday.

The senior girls final is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday. Yale has advanced to the last two senior girls finals, but have not won since 2018.

In other action, the junior boys final will feature Abbotsford Senior taking on Rick Hansen. Abbotsford beat Dasmesh 87-46 on Tuesday and then defeated Yale 47-30 on Wednesday. Hansen posted a 93-28 win over Bateman on Tuesday and then beat Mouat 70-58 on Wednesday.

The junior boys final is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Yale and MEI will square off in the junior girls final, which is set for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Yale posted a 74-19 win over Abbotsford Christian on Tuesday and then beat St. John Brebeuf 65-10 on Wednesday. MEI beat Abbotsford Middle 77-16 on Tuesday and then defeated Mouat 51-35.

The game is a rematch of the 2021 junior girls final that saw Yale win 49-33.

The Grade 9 boys final is also set with Abbotsford Senior battling Abbotsford Christian. That game is set for noon on Saturday. Abbotsford Senior is looking to repeat as division champions.

The Grade 9 girls final will see Abbotsford Christian take on the winner of the Abbotsford Senior and Hansen game on Thurtsday. The Grade 9 final occurs at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Both the Grade 8 boys and girls finals will be determined later on Thursday. The boys final is set for 1 p.m. and the girls is at 11:30 a.m.
