Last Saturday was a landmark occasion for the Abbotsford Falcons, as the local football program went four-for-four in Valley Community Football League championship games at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley.
“It’s an excellent thing, because this hasn’t happened in a long time,” Falcons president Chel Sanghera enthused. “We’ve asked about how long it’s been, and people say it’s been years since one club won in all four divisions.
“Abbotsford should definitely be proud of them.”
The Falcons atoms and peewees both won via shutout. The atoms blanked North Langley 24-0, while the peewees posted a 14-0 whitewashing of Meadow Ridge Gold.
The Falcons Black junior bantam squad edged North Langley 28-20 in a hard-fought contest, while the bantams upset the Chilliwack Giants 25-12. The Giants had been favoured after posting an 8-0 regular season record, while the Falcons were second at 6-2.
The atom, peewee and junior bantam teams were all undefeated in VCFL play this season.
The atoms’ season is done, as there is no provincial championship in that age group. The peewees will play Kelowna in the provincial semifinals at Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary in Maple Ridge (Saturday, 11 a.m. kickoff), while the junior bantams will play Coquitlam in the semis (Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Percy Perry Stadium, Coquitlam).
The bantams have advanced directly to the B.C. final – they will face South Delta at McLeod Park at 2 p.m. on Dec. 2.
