The CBC Bearcats women’s volleyball team dominated the Camosun Chargers over the weekend, and could now be poised for a first round playoff date with their rivals from UFV.
The women swept the Chargers 3-0 (26-24, 27-25 and 25-23) on Friday, and were led by star outside hitter Jodi Enns, who had a team-high 15 kills. Julia Weiss added 17 digs, while Janelle Warkentin contributed with four blocks.
The Bearcats’ strong play continued on Saturday, as they beat the Chargers 3-1. Camosun destroyed CBC 25-10 in the opening set, but the Bearcats prevailed in a long set two 32-30, and then won 25-16 and 25-13 to earn the victory.
Enns was outstanding on Saturday, with 22 kills and 11 digs. Warkentin recorded a team-high six blocks.
The pair of victories improves the Bearcats to nine wins and 11 losses. The nine wins represents CBC’s highest total since 2012-13, when they posted 13.
The Bearcats are likely to finish fifth in the Pacwest, and will either play the Cascades or the Capilano Blues at the provincials, which occur later this month at UFV.
The CBC men battled the Chargers hard, but ultimately came up short on Friday and Saturday.
The club opened Friday with a 30-28 win in the first set, but then fell 25-14 in the second frame. CBC went up 2-1 after a 25-22 in set three, but then lost set four 25-14 and the deciding set five 15-11 to lose 3-2.
The Bearcats saw themselves up 2-1 again on Saturday, but again dropped the final two sets to lose 3-2 (25-13, 19-25, 14-25, 25-20 and 15-7).
The men’s record now sits at four wins and 18 losses, and they are clinging to the sixth and final playoff spot in the Pacwest. They have the same record as the College of the Rockies Avalanche, but hold the tiebreaker after winning the season series against the Avs 3-1.
Both the men’s and women’s teams now have a bye week, before finishing off the regular season with a home and home pair of games against the Cascades. The games run on Feb. 16 at UFV and Feb. 17 at CBC.
The provincials run from Feb. 22 to 24 at UFV.
