The first playoff trip in the history of the Columbia Bible College Bearcats women’s basketball program turned out to be a one-off.

CBC traveled to Nanaimo to take on the Camosun Chargers on March 1 in the Pacwest quarterfinals, but fell 73-57.

The game got away from the Bearcats in the second quarter when they were outscored 22-12, and the club never managed to battle back.

Sarah Rozendal led all Bearcats players with 17 points, while Harvina Kaler added 16. Anna Kamerman and Deanna Esau each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

It wasn’t all bad news for the Bearcats, as head coach Angela Booy was named the Pacwest women’s head coach of the year. Rozendal was named a conference second team all-star and Kamerman was selected as a member of the all-rookie team.

The women’s tournament was won by the Capilano Blues, who defeated the Chargers 75-70 in the final on Saturday. Abbotsford’s Carmelle M’Bikata was huge in the title game, with 26 points and 16 rebounds. The W.J. Mouat grad was named the most valuable player at the tournament. M’Bikata and the Blues now head to New Brunswick to compete for a national championship starting on March 15.

Also in the women’s tournament, the Abbotsford trio of Amber Beasley, Sara Kurath and Karanveer Rai helped lead the Douglas College Royals to a Pacwest bronze medal.
