The Calgary Dinos proved why both the men’s and women’s basketball programs are at the top of the Canada West on Friday night.

The visitors completed a sweep of the UFV Cascades men’s and women’s teams, with both wins by significant margins.

The women dropped an 81-56 decision, while the men fell 85-51.

The women’s game was closer, with the Dinos pulling away in the fourth quarter. The Cascades trailed by just six points - 57-51 - mid-way through the quarter, but Calgary took over from there.

Taylor Claggett led all UFV players with 15 points and seven rebounds, but was guarded heavily in the fourth quarter and was unable to generate much offence. Amanda Thompson added 12 points in the loss.

The women fall to 10-7, and are involved in a logjam of teams battling for sixth overall in the conference. The two teams meet again tomorrow at 5 p.m. in Abbotsford.

The men had a tall task in the undefeated defending national champions, and also had difficulty putting points on the board all night.

The club scored just 21 points in the first half, and shot just 28 per cent. The second half was slightly better, with the Cascades percentage rising to 31 per cent. Sukhjot Bains recored a team-high 18 points, while Sukhman Sandhu added 12 points off the bench. Mark Johnson grabbed 12 boards to lead all UFV players.

The Cascades had no answer for Calgary’s Brett Layton, who scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the visitors.

The men’s record drops to 11-6, and are tied for fifth overall in the conference.

The teams meet again tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Abbotsford.

Half-time of the men’s game featured the third annual Cascades Hall of Fame event, with Derek Fletcher (men’s volleyball), Andrea Wigman (women’s soccer), The 1999-2000 national championship-winning Cascades men’s basketball team and former UFV president H.A. “Skip” Bassford entering the hall.
