So far, so very good for the Abbotsford Cardinals.

On opening weekend, the local B.C. Premier Baseball League team swept to three straight victories on their home turf at DeLair Park.

The Cardinals knocked off the perennial powerhouse Langley Blaze 8-4 in their opener on Friday, getting two RBI apiece from Liam Shibata and Jesse Braun and five solid innings from starting pitcher Alex Gibbons.

On Sunday, the Abby squad swept a doubleheader against the Coquitlam Reds, winning 3-2 and 4-1.

In the first game of the day, starter Jonah Swanson scattered eight hits over six innings, Tanner Rempel went 3-for-4 at the plate, and Shibata hit a bases-loaded single to drive in Branden Gill with the winning run in the sixth inning.

The Cards completed the weekend sweep behind five innings of one-run pitching from junior call-up John Lipp, while the offensive effort was highlighted by back-to-back RBI hits by Benji Wieler and Nick LaFlamme in the second inning.

The Cards visit the Blaze for a rematch Thursday (6:30 p.m., McLeod Park), and host the Okanagan A’s in doubleheaders Saturday (2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.) at DeLair Park.
