Big wins for Bearcat volleyballers

The Columbia Bible College men's volleyball team had a huge weekend on the road, sweeping a pair of games on Vancouver Island.

The Bearcats knocked off the defending national champion Camosun Chargers on Friday in four sets (25-19, 26-28, 25-23, 25-23), and capped the trip with a five-set triumph (25-27, 25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 15-11) on Saturday over the Vancouver Island University Mariners, who are ranked No. 11 nationally.

The Bearcats, ranked No. 14 in Canada heading into the weekend, figure to move up this week, and they claimed sole possession of second in the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association with a 7-4 record.

Matt Kaminski led the Bearcats with 19 kills and three blocks against VIU, while Tom Charbonneau (11 kills) and Danny Grant (five blocks) also had big games.

• The CBC women's volleyball team (3-8) dropped both weekend games in straight sets to Camosun and VIU.

• In Abbotsford, the VIU basketball teams got the better of the Bearcats. The CBC men's hoopsters (1-10) fell 105-42 on Friday and 83-55 on Saturday, while the Bearcats women (0-11) lost by scores of 102-41and 95-33.

• The Bearcats volleyball teams visit their crosstown rivals from the University of the Fraser Valley on Thursday (women 6 p.m., men 7:45 p.m.).
