Bearcats impress south of border

The Columbia Bible College women's volleyball team turned in an impressive second-place finish at the Evergreen State Red Lion Invitational Tournament in Olympia, Wash. last week.

The Bearcats opened the event with a straight-sets loss to eventual tourney champion Northwest University on Thursday. Middle April van Wieren paced the 'Cats with eight kills, while sophomore left side Jill Ratzlaff led the defence with 14 digs.

The CBC women bounced back with victories over Evergreen State and Lewis and Clark College on Friday. Reigning PacWest rookie of the year Sadie Ball racked up 18 kills and 18 digs against the host squad, while rookie right side Maria Cupido chipped in with 11 kills and her sister Anna registered 42 assists.

Against Lewis and Clark, Ball once again led the offence with 11 kills, while Sharaya Schulte posted 17 digs.

On Saturday, the Bearcats closed out the event with a three-set triumph over Simon Fraser University. Allysia Smith had four service aces, including three in a row to close out the second set, while Ball and van Wieren notched 10 kills apiece.

Ball was named to the all-tournament team.

The Bearcats volleyball women host Walla Walla University in exhibition action on Wednesday at Columbia Place (7 p.m. start).
