Abby women's soccer team falls in OT

The Magnuson Ford women’s soccer team was shorthanded for their Provincial B Cup semifinal, but turned in a gritty effort nevertheless.

Abbotsford’s Magnuson Ford women’s soccer team was shorthanded for their Provincial B Cup semifinal last Sunday at Victoria, but turned in a gritty effort nevertheless in a 1-0 extra-time loss.

The Mariners, coming off a 2-1 quarter-final win over Prospect Lake, only had 10 players available for their match vs. Gorge FC, a team which had lost just one game all season.

But the local squad pushed the Victoria club to the limit, out-shooting and out-chancing the hosts, only to find themselves locked in a scoreless tie through 90 minutes.

Gorge FC finally broke through in the 99th minute, squeezing a shot past Mariners keeper Karlee Arden and hanging on for the win.

“We’re gutted,” said John Werrell, who coaches the team along with Mike Leclerc. “This will sting us all for a while, but I’m so proud of all 10 of those ladies today. They left it all on the field.”
