Abby soccer teams excel in Fraser Valley League Cup finals

The Abbotsford Magnuson Ford Soccer Club was well-represented in the Fraser Valley League Cup, with eight teams advancing to the finals.

The U13 Lightning boys team from Abbotsford Magnuson Ford Soccer Club was one of four local teams to win a Fraser Valley League Cup this season.

The Abbotsford Magnuson Ford Soccer Club was well-represented in the Fraser Valley League Cup, with eight teams advancing to the finals and four teams emerging victorious.

On the boys side, the U13 Lightning, U16 Storm and U17 Thunder all won. The Lightning prevailed in dramatic fashion over Langley United – the game was tied 1-1 after regulation time, with Puneet Mangat scoring the Abby goal. In the penalty shootout, keeper Brandon Pizzuto stopped three of four Langley attempts, while the Lightning scored on three of their four shots.

The Thunder beat Langley United 3-2 in the U17 final, while the Storm were victorious by a 5-3 score.

On the girls side, the U14 Lightning beat Chilliwack 1-0 on penalties to secure a Coastal Cup berth, then knocked off the Ladner Rangers 3-1 to win the League Cup. Against Chilliwack, Nadja Reimer and Jasmin Virk scored in the shootout while keeper Mercedes Meincke had a clean sheet in penalty kicks. Against Ladner, goals by Reimer, Virk and Kelsey Friesen helped the Abby side rally from a 1-0 halftime deficit.

The U17 Hurricane, U17 Inferno, U15 Storm and U13 Hurricane all fell in their Cup finals.
