The top high school wrestlers from across the province will be competing this weekend in the British Columbia Secondary Schools Wrestling Association Championships (BCSSWA) at the Ag Rec Centre.
More than 500 athletes and 100 coaches will participate in the three-day event, which is hosted by W.J. Mouat Secondary, Mid Valley Athletic Club and the Abbotsford wrestling community and sanctioned by BC School Sports and the BC Wrestling Association.
This is the 10th time Mouat wrestling coach Jim Mitchell has chaired the high school provincials in Abbotsford.
“It’s exciting,” Mitchell said about hosting the provincial championships.
Mitchell noted that Abbotsford has traditionally been a hotbed of high school wrestling talent, and this year is no exception.
Abbotsford Traditional Secondary has had several first-place finishes at tournaments in the 2014-15 season, most recently a first-place finish at the Fraser Valley qualifier, where Mouat finished second. In the 2014 provincials, the Mouat Hawks boys’ team placed second. Rick Hansen also has a strong wrestling tradition.
