Abbotsford’s Lana Dueck signs with UBC rugby program

Yale Secondary student has won gold at the high school and Canada Games level in the sport

Abbotsford’s Lana Dueck has signed with the UBC Thunderbirds women’s rugby program.

UBC announced the addition of the Grade 12 Yale Secondary student and several other recruits on social media on March 16.

Dueck won a gold medal with Team BC rugby at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. That team dominated at the event and was also recently nominate for a Sport BC team of the year award.

She was the team captain of the Yale Lions senior girls rugby team that captured the school’s first-ever girls provincial title last year in June. She also represented the Fraser Valley region in rugby at the Prince George 2022 BC Summer Games last July.

More recently she played on the Yale Lions senior girls basketball team that placed fourth in the province at the 4A tournament.

She joins a UBC team that also has Abbotsford’s Riley Willems and Emily Meier. The team also features Mission’s Alancia Jeffery and Chilliwack’s Mackenzie Carson.

UBC finished the 2022-23 season with an overall record of 8-1-1. They captured both the Canada West title (on Oct. 23) and the U Sports championship (on Nov. 6) with wins over the University of Victoria Vikes.
