Abbotsford’s Isabelle Harris has captured a silver medal in judo at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

The longtime Abbotsford Judo Club member competed on Sunday (Oct. 29) and opened with an 11-0 win over Mexico’s Prisca Awiti in the women’s 63 kilograms quarterfinal round.

She followed that up with a 10-0 win over Brazil’s Ketleyn Lima Quadros in the semi-finals. That win advanced her to the gold medal bout, but she lost 10-0 to Cuba’s Maylin Del Toro Carvajal.

This is the Pan Am Games debut for Harris, who has also won several national medals in her young career. The 22-year-old is coming off a silver medal at the 2023 Jeux de la Francophonie, held in Kinshasa, Congo this summer.

Abbotsford-trained gymnast Zachary Clay won a gold in pommel horse and a silver as part of Canada’s men’s artistic gymnastics team at the Games last week.

Abbotsford athletes Jake Thiel (men’s rugby), Shalaya Valenzuela (women’s rugby), Callum Pilgrim (women’s softball) and Nishan Randhawa (wrestling) all begin their respective competitions later this week.
