The Columbia Bible College Bearcats women's basketball team heads into the holiday break nationally ranked and on pace for the best record in program history.
The Bearcats posted a pair of dominant wins over the Okanagan College Coyotes in Abbotsford on Friday (Nov. 22) and Saturday (Nov. 23) to run their record to a sparkling 9-3.
The 2023-24 Pacwest season saw the club finish at 14-10, which established the record for the best finish in the history of the women's team. There's a good chance the Bearcats make it two straight record-breaking seasons.
The Bearcats opened the pair of games this weekend against the Coyotes with a 91-63 win on Friday.
CBC forward Elissa Vreugdenhill had a monstrous game, with 23 points and 24 rebounds. She nearly out-rebounded the Coyotes team, who recorded 29. Guard Julie Dueck added 18 points, while Samara Mason and Jenae Rhodes had 13 and 12 points off the bench.
The Bearcats shot 37.5 per cent from the field and held the Coyotes to just 29.5 per cent. CBC built a 29-18 lead in the first quarter and didn't trail for the rest of the game.
It was a similar story on Saturday, with the Bearcats posting a 93-55 win.
Dueck scored a team-high 21 points and Vreugdenhill had another double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Mason again was effective off the bench with 17 points and six rebounds. CBC also shot 41 per cent from the field.
The women rank second in the Pacwest heading into the break and only trail the VIU Mariners who sit at 9-1. Both the Bearcats (14th) and the Mariners (fifth) cracked the top-15 of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association rankings.
The Bearcats and Mariners will meet in Abbotsford for games on Friday, Jan. 10 and Saturday, Jan. 11.
