Abbotsford well-represented on B.C. U18 football squad

Four members of the W.J. Mouat Hawks highlight the local content on the provincial under-18 football team.

Hawks defensive backs Deion Bain and Nathan Henczel, linebacker Jake Heathcote, and offensive lineman Dairien Silva will travel with Team B.C. to Lethbridge, Alta. next month (July 9-15) for the Football Canada Cup.

Mouat's four-man contingent is second only to the Mount Douglas Rams of Victoria, who put five players on the squad. Bain is a returnee from last year's provincial team, which won bronze at the Canada Cup, while Henczel, Heathcote and Silva are first-timers.

That three of the four Hawks play on the defensive side of the ball suggests Mouat will be a tough outfit to score on next season.

"I think we'll have a pretty strong defence," Mouat head coach Denis Kelly said. "It'll be a good experience for them over the summer."

Also selected to Team B.C. were Dallas Yassinsky of the Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers and Kent Hicks of the Robert Bateman Timberwolves.

Yassinsky, a receiver, was eighth in receiving yardage during the 2010 AA regular season with 254 yards on 18 catches.

Hicks, a defensive lineman, was a standout for the T-Wolves during their inaugural football campaign last fall.
