Abbotsford’s Gordon Langfield proved his strength at the sixth annual International Powerlifting Federation’s World Men’s Classic Championships in Calgary earlier this month.

The 50-year-old placed first overall in the 93 kilograms Master 2 division, taking home the gold medal on his home country soil.

Langfield bench pressed 391 pounds, squatted 474 pounds and deadlifted 507 to earn the world championship.

“When I put on my Canada powerlifting singlet I had a rush of emotion that was so surreal,” he stated. “I was doing this for Team Canada, my friends, family, and anyone who impacted my life. The road to the worlds was a lot of sacrifice, diet, physio, injuries, long training hours and literally a lifetime of training.”

Langfield was an all-star defensive back with the Abbotsford Airforce of the British Columbia Football Conference from 1987-90 and has competed in weightlifting and powerlifting events for several years.

The Abbotsford Senior Secondary grad is a regular patron at the local Goodlife Fitness gym.
