Abbotsford teams win big at 43rd annual Gobbler Rugby Tournament

Abbotsford Rugby Football Club teams win in competitive men’s and women’s divisions

The 43rd annual Gobbler Rugby Tournament made its grand return to the Exhibition Park pitch over the weekend, with organizers stating the event was a success.

The tournament ran on Saturday (Oct. 9) and Sunday (Oct. 10) with five women’s teams, four competitive men’s teams and four social men’s teams battling it out.

Squads traveled from as far away as Penticton and Kamloops for the event, which saw Abbotsford teams take home the top prize in both the women’s and competitive men’s divisions. The Abbotsford Rugby Football Club men edged Burnaby 5-3 in a defensive battle for that crown and the ARFC women defeated SFU 15-10 for top spot in that division.

SFU/Ridge beat Kamloops 42-30 in the men’s social division.

The Phat Gobbler Saloon fundraiser, which took place at Exhibition Park on Saturday night, saw attendees treated to a country-rock concert with the Tanner Olsen Band and the Topaz Band, as well as DJ Trav. Former Canadian Idol contestant and Abbotsford native Karen Lee Batten also performed at the event.

All money raised from the event went to both ARFC and The Foundry Abbotsford to help fight those dealing with mental health issues.
