A total of fourteen local karate competitors took home medals at the recent Budo Cup at Yale Secondary.

Abbotsford Shokotkan Karate Dojo athletes cleaned up at home last weekend.

The club hosted the annual Budo Cup at Yale Secondary, with a handful of locals earning medals.

Alex Leonard, Trentin Vuong, Kaelyn Quinlan and Harnoor Bhatti all won gold in their respective divisions.

Also winning medals were: Esther Quinlan, Angad Dhillon, Chloe Johnson, Kayla Cross, Nicola Knudsen, Will Dahlman, Jacob Leonard, Basant Dhillon, Ryan Marshall, and Kazuki MacDonald.

The New Year has been an exciting one for the club, as they also moved into their new dojo at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre. The location is in addition to the classes they teach at Bakerview School.

The club trains in traditional Japanese karate, and they are members of the Japan Karate Association of BC and are affiliated directly with the JKA Headquarters in Tokyo. The Abbotsford club is routinely visited by some of the highest ranking senseis from JKA Headquarters to ensure that its teachings remain consistent with the teachings in Japan.

In other local karate news, the club also announced that they will be hosting the Karate B.C. Provincial Championships in 2018. The event is regarded as the the biggest event on the calendar for JKABC, and will likely be held in the spring.
