The Abbotsford Cardinals started poorly but finished strong during a pair of doubleheaders against the Okanagan Athletics at DeLair Park on Saturday and Sunday.
The teams were tied at three after four innings during game one on Saturday, but the Athletics scored six runs in the final three innings to pick up the 9-3 win.
Abbotsford managed just three hits in the loss. Dylan Ohlsen, Colton Harold and Brett Bass scored the three runs.
The third inning proved to be the problem for the Cardinals in Saturday's game two. Okanagan scored four runs in that inning to hang on for the 5-3 win. Harold had a team-high two hits, and Chase Stewart drove one run in. Athletics pitcher Sean Haylow pitched a complete game in the win.
The clubs met for another doubleheader on Sunday, and game one needed extra innings.
Abbotsford and Okanagan remained tied at two after the fifth inning, and it took until the top of the ninth for the Athletics to break the tie.
The Cardinals got on the board in the fourth, with runs batted in from Carter Loewen and Ethan Kano-McGregor. Abbotsford's starting pitcher Chase Stewart had a solid day on the mound, allowing two runs in five innings and striking out seven.
Abbotsford finally tasted victory in Sunday's game two, as catcher Kayden Beauregard had a game-winning double to score Stewart in the top of the seventh inning and give the Cardinals the 2-1 win. Gage Buck drove in the Cardinals' first run. Buck and Beauregard both had two hits, while Konnor Piotto also hit a double.
Cardinals starting pitcher Kano-McGregor picked up his first win on the mound, allowing just one run off of five hits during a complete game performance. He also struck out 10, and only walked two.
Abbotsford's record now sits at five wins and 12 losses, and they are in 10th place in the 12-team British Columbia Premier Baseball League.
The Cardinals return home for a doubleheader against the Parksville Royals at DeLair Park on Saturday. Game one occurs at 1 p.m., with game two set to start at 3:30 p.m.
