Abbotsford athletes head to BC Winter Games

Local competitors traveling to Kamloops this weekend for action

The 2018 BC Winter Games run from Friday to Sunday in Kamloops.

Abbotsford athletes have made the trek to Kamloops and begin competing in the 2018 BC Winter Games on Friday.

A handful of local competitors, coaches and officials are participating at the event, which runs until Sunday.

The athletes will all be a part of the Zone 3 Fraser Valley team, joining athletes from Langley, Aldergrove, Chilliwack, Hope, Maple Ridge, Agassiz, Mission and Pitt Meadows.

Judo will see the biggest contingent of Abbotsford residents, with 10 locals hitting the mat.

Kailyn Agassiz, Willow Burgess, Dylan Comeau, Spencer Cyr, Caio deFigueiroa, William Neufeld, Lola Paller, Brayden Simpson, Logan Simpson and Nicholas Yokoyama all heading to Kamloops.

Biathlon also has a strong Abbotsford flavour, with locals Alyssa Chapman, Jaclyn Kealy, William Tang and Jeremiah Ward all competing.

Other athletes heading to Kamloops include: Keziah Dreves (archery), Benjamin Garrett and Carlos Perez (basketball-wheelchair), Chadsey Maria Honig and Della Williamson (figure skating), Cyndi Fairbrother and Lauren Robertson (gymnastics), Celine Luu and Angelin Rajesh (karate), Olivia Smit and Jailene Smit (ringette), Kaitlyn Bay and Sydney Kardoes (skiing-alpine), Ethan Pedersen (snowboarding) and Ramanjit Chauhan (speed skating).

The Games kick off with the opening ceremonies at the Sandman Centre on Thursday evening and the end with the closing ceremonies on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
