The Abbotsford Angels Minor Baseball Association ended off July in a big way, with several teams excelling at their respective provincial tournaments.
The 15U AA team earned silver at their provincials in Tsawwassen. They went 3-1 in pool play and then won the semi-final game 9-7 to advance to the finals where they fell to Vancouver.
The 13U AAA team took home gold at their provincials in Duncan. They finished top in their pool going 4-0 with wins over Cloverdale, Vancouver and Ladner. They then defeated their rivals Maple Ridge in the semi-final before downing Cloverdale in the final. The 13U AAA's next play a qualifying tournament in Chilliwack to see what teams move on to the national and westerns tournaments.
The 13U AA team also took home gold at their provincials in Burnaby. They went 3-1 in pool play and then beat Cranbrook 3-1 in the semi-final. The final matched the Angels with the Aldergrove Dodgers, and the Angels earned the 8-3 victory. The club secured a spot in the westerns in Winnipeg (Aug 16-18) with the win.
"We are very proud of these teams and how they represented Abbotsford baseball so well at their respective provincial tournaments" stated Angels president Rob Brandsma. "One of our Core Values is, To represent Abbotsford Minor Baseball and all their families, players and our community with the highest degree of respect, honour, commitment and class and I feel these teams did an exemplary job of that this past weekend.
It's not easy when you have limited field time and not the most ideal field conditions," he added. "Abbotsford lacks good quality sporting fields to accommodate the growth of our association. Some of our teams are lucky to get one game and a practice or two a week due to this lack of sports fields. I am hoping that we can see some change to the sports field infrastructure soon so baseball (and all field sports) in Abby can continue to flourish with the continued growth of our City."
