More accountability needed for recycling to work

While I may personally think that this is a great idea, I am wondering how this will work out in actual practice in multi-family complexes.

I live in a strata townhouse complex and the recycling efforts of residents here could be greatly improved. On a semi-regular basis, I still see basic recycling materials like cardboard in the garbage bins.

Soon, residents may need to further divide their garbage into compostables and not? I’m afraid that this will be a terrible disaster, as I’m sure many tin cans (amongst many other items) are still being put into the regular garbage bags.

This problem is not unique, as I have seen these kinds of situations within other apartment and townhouse complexes. Strata councils and residents lack in personal responsibility to do the right thing.

Picture this: You have a garbage bin and a recycling bin sitting side by side, and still you see recycling materials in the garbage bin? This is not uncommon.

Strata councils and residents need to be repeatedly educated as to how to recycle properly, but that is not enough. There needs to be accountability for composting (and recycling in general) to work properly. Strata councils need to actively enforce this, before fines are levied on them, or refusal to empty bins by private companies.

We all need to work together for this to work properly.
