LETTER: Little sympathy for student debt loads

Why is there so little sympathy for student debt?

Re: Article by Kelvin Gawley - Student debt, Abbotsford News, April 19.

Why is there so little sympathy for student debt?

1. A lot of debt is them buying their “wants” instead of only their “needs.”

2. During the summer do they work at jobs and apply their earnings against their debt? Most do not do so, so they simply go on vacation, which again increases their debt.

3. Their debt never decreases unless their parents again rescue their finances.

I am 86 years old and how well I remember all my peers finishing university without debt because we paid our way while we attended university. That built true character.

Many students today believe society should bail them out. Have we failed them or helped them?
