LETTER: Insurance idea just won’t work

While Roger Boivin’s idea of insurance for everyone is an interesting concept, one needs look no further than ICBC to see what happens when government goes into the insurance business. Initially formed to provide low cost auto insurance for British Columbians, before long it had replaced the old Motor Vehicle Branch and become responsible for everything from licensing to enforcement, its excess revenues used as a tax on motorists by siphoning them off for general revenue.

It may be a good idea for British Columbians in principle but unfortunately, governments can’t resist appropriating good ideas for their own purposes.
