LETTER: Implement cycling master plan

Last year my adult kids (and avid riders) bought me a bicycle, a really good bicycle.

I felt both grateful and a bit guilty because the only bikes I ever bought them were second hand from the MCC store. There's nothing wrong with second hand bikes, of course. In fact, I think they're better value for most of us. Still, I'm part of a generation that is easily influenced by marketing and materialism. So I've been riding more with this awesome bike.

But when I ride around Abbotsford, I see how dangerous it can be. We have the beginnings of cycling lanes. They start here and there, and then end with no apparent reason.

A few weeks ago, our mayor, gamely trying to support "Bike to Work Week" discovered how perilous it can be to cycle in Abbotsford. Thankfully he was not seriously injured.

His experience shows us that before we can safely and confidently use bicycles as transportation, we need to implement the cycling master plan that was envisioned years ago and has never been fulfilled. Let's make it a priority for our new official community plan!
