LETTER: Garbage program is fantastic

It forces people to look at how much waste they are producing and try and curb it...

This is in response to Suzanne Bertness' letter to the Abby News on January 15th speaking out against the new garbage policy.  I used to live in Saanich, part of the Capital region, and biweekly pickup for garbage was the norm.  We did not get weekly pickup of recycling and there was no compost program at the time that I lived there.  We dealt with it and learned to limit how much waste we were creating.

The new garbage program in Abbotsford is fantastic.  It forces people to look at how much waste they are producing and try and curb it.  Our planet needs all the help it can get and I'm grateful for the city of Abbotsford for implementing the biweekly pickup.   We have a family of four that often puts out only one garbage bin every two weeks.  But we have two large compost bins (garbage cans with the compost sticker) and often 4 recycling bags every week.

Our heating bill hasn't changed either because we close the door when we go outside.
