LETTER: Birds' homes taken away

Municipality's installation of LED lights has led to far fewer birds

Recently the City of Abbotsford installed LED lights at Mill Lake to deter the breeding of Canada geese. The lake is now almost entirely devoid of waterfowl, including buffleheads, scaups, coots, and the formerly ubiquitous mallards.

As a friend of mine, who walks the lake almost daily, remarked: “I’d rather have too many geese than none at all.”

Mill Lake is a natural nesting site for all kinds of waterfowl. They were here first. We’ve taken away their homes.
