High school buildings

The last couple of editions of the The News have been filled with wonderful and interesting pieces of journalism regarding Abbotsford Senior High.

As a 1963 graduate I read them with interest. However, I was saddened that the recording of the history was not correct. The building that is being written about opened in 1952 as Abbotsford Junior High School. The building of Abbotsford Senior High School was in 1955 (as recorded) but it was actually the building on the south side of the field that was torn down a couple of years ago.

The Panthers basketball games were always held in the junior high gymnasium as it was the larger of the two.

These two schools remained in their respective building until the mid-1960s when a switch was made with a very big ceremony involving the students walking across the field.

A point of interest is that AJHS was built in 1952 for $535,000.00 which included the construction of 13 elementary classrooms at other locations.

In 1955, the now torn down ASHS was built at a cost of $735,000 which included the construction of six elementary classsrooms at other locations.
