How interesting that Abby council now finds the funding formula for policing to be “unfair.” Cast your minds back 20 years or so to when the city and the District of Matsqui amalgamated – remember that there was a choice at that time as to keeping the RCMP or Matsqui Police?
The so-called wisdom of the day was to forget the RCMP who had patrolled the district for many years, and to keep “our own” police force, renaming the Matsqui Police to Abbotsford Police. Everyone seemed happy enough with that decision.
Wasn’t Mayor George Peary on council then, or am I mistaken?
Now that Abbotsford has become the “crime capital” of just about the world, our council suddenly sees the error of its ways, and wants to not only have its cake, but eat it too!
There are still many long memories out there, and as is often said, “Hindsight is 20/20 vision!”
