May 14, 1941 - April 23, 2024
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Fred Ewert. Fred was born in Germany on May 14, 1941. In 1952, his family immigrated to Canada and soon settled in Yarrow, BC. It was there, as a teenager, that he met the love of his life, Dorothy. They were married in 1962. After living briefly in Vancouver and Mission, they moved to Abbotsford. Throughout their marriage of almost 58 years, they enjoyed travelling, particularly in their motorhome. They had many great adventures including the Alaska Highway, the Oregon Coast, annual trips to Reno and a cross Canada trip. In addition, they enjoyed many wonderful years at their cabin at Green Lake. When Dorothy became seriously ill, Fred dropped everything else in his life to care for her in their home. When it was no longer possible for her to stay at home, he visited her three times a day at the care home. Fred remained positive, committed and caring until Dorothy's passing in 2020.
Fred had a lengthy career as an educator in the Mission School District. He taught in, and was principal of, many of the elementary schools throughout the district. In addition to the classroom and office, he enjoyed coaching school teams, especially soccer and volleyball. He was also dedicated to service in the Mission Teachers Union.
Fred had a lifelong love of soccer. He played on many teams throughout his life. The most significant experiences were with the Aldergrove Soccer Club. He was part of the original club builders group, and ultimately held many positions within the club. His connection to the club included playing for several seniors teams, culminating in the "Over Sixties" team. The teams played in many tournaments throughout Canada and the U.S. and South America. Fred was a proud representative of the club and his country and enjoyed meeting competitors and new friends. Fred also held executive positions in the Fraser Valley Soccer League and was an on-field official for many years. He also volunteered for many years with the BC Senior Games as a coordinator.
Fred was caring and supportive of his entire family. He was always there. Whether it was attending practices and games, celebrating day to day events and important accomplishments, or assisting in challenging times, Fred's love, wisdom and influence were always evident and appreciated.
Fred was predeceased by his mother, father, three brothers, a sister and his wife. He is survived by his sons Chris (Davinder) and Mike, and grandchildren Chantel and Kalista.
