August 12, 1931 - July 18, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of our beloved mother and grandmother, Sardarni Shangar Kaur Phulka, lovingly referred to as Bibi. Bibi Ji passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 18th, 2020 at the age of 88 in the comfort of her home and surrounded by her family members as she took her final breaths.
Bibi Ji was born in the village of Baichaan, Hoshiarpur and went on to become the wife of the late Sardar Gurmit Singh Phulka of Khakhan, Hoshiarpur where they started their family with their four children. Sardar Gurmit Singh Phulka was a member of the Indian Army serving for 20 years and was well known in the local villages as an extraordinarily strong man and excellent kabaddi player. After Gurmit Singh's unfortunate passing in 1972, Bibi Ji raised her four children on her own as a single mother. In 1983, Bibi Ji immigrated to Canada and settled in Abbotsford, BC with her family. Despite the struggles she faced as a young widow, Bibi Ji was known to have a very generous heart and was always finding ways to serve her community. Bibi Ji took great care in instilling strong values, that both she and Gurmit Singh held, in her children that have now carried on throughout generations to become their legacy.
Bibi Ji is survived by her sons, Amarjit Singh Phulka and Harjit Singh Phulka and daughters Kamaljit Kaur Khakh and Simarjit Kaur Khakh, along with their families including 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Everything that this family has accomplished has been due to the love and support Bibi Shangar Kaur Phulka bestowed on them. She has been the catalyst for not only her children's success, but her grandchildren's as well and will be missed immensely.
We would like to thank all of our family and friends who have extended their condolences during this difficult time.
