Roy Garrett

Our wonderful, wonderful Dad, Roy Garrett, passed away on March 6, 2017 at the age of 95. He went to be with his beloved wife of 73 years, Eileen who passed away on the same day and exact time two years earlier and his first child, Buddy. Roy leaves behind a loving legacy in his three children: Irene (Angus), Doreen (Stan), and Ken (Diana); eight grandchildren, Shaun (Kelda), Brad (Matiya), Kacie (Kevin), Troy (Danika), Jenny, Kathleen, Mitchell and Rachel; and five great grandchildren, Nate, Faith, Paisley, Isla and Calvin. Roy was born in Six Bells, Wales to Bert and Olive Garrett. The family immigrated to Coleman in the Crows Nest Pass of Alberta when he was 3. Sister Iris and brother Dave completed the family. There Roy met the love of his life Eileen whom he married in 1943 just one week before he left for Europe to fight in World War 2. Roy was overseas for 33 months, seeing action in North Africa, Italy and Holland. He received “the honour and distinction of being Mentioned in Dispatches in recognition of gallant and distinguished service” by the Minister of National Defence. Roy returned and he and Mom went on to raise their family in Abbotsford, BC. During these years, Roy was very involved with the Royal Canadian Legion serving as President, Past President and Parade Marshall. He received much recognition as a Lifetime Member and The Meritorious Service Medal. Roy also coached the Legion soccer team which won the Provincial Sun Soccer Championship twice. Roy and Eileen were honoured as Abbotsford Pioneers in 2002 by their good friend Mayor George Ferguson. Roy was an amazing man who deeply loved his family, his friends, his community and his country. He always said he had a good life. Roy will be greatly missed but will be thought of always and memories will be shared often with laughter and smiles. A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 1:30 pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC with a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion directly following.
