Peter Penner

August 14, 1931 – January 2, 2020
Peter Penner passed away peacefully at the age of 88 following a brief illness. Peter was predeceased by his wife Hilda in 2016. Also predeceased by his second wife Helene (nee Goossen), his first wife Helena (nee Nickel), his parents Jakob & Katharina (Thiessen) Penner, his siblings: Jakob, Hans (who died in infancy), Tina, Hans, Lena, Mariechen, Helmut, his stepmother Katharina (Klippenstein) and step siblings: Anna, Frieda, Hans, Ernst and Erich.
Peter will be deeply missed by his children and grandchildren: Rudolf, Karl (and Cynthia and their children Luke and Aaron), Lili (and Ray and their children Eli and Kalena). He also leaves to mourn his passing, his sisters: Erna in Abbotsford, Erika in Brazil and Valentine in Abbotsford.
Peter was born in Filadelfia, Paraguay. At age 19 he moved with his family to Brazil and in 1955 he moved to Vancouver, Canada to marry Helena Nickel who passed away in 1956. In 1959, he married Helene Goosen and they had three children. She passed away in 1981. In 1982, he married Hilda (Willms), to whom he was married for 34 years. She passed away in 2016.
Peter’s vocation was housebuilding and he built many custom homes in the Vancouver area. For recreation he loved the outdoors; camping, skiing and canoeing. He was instrumental in starting a boys’ club in his home church and was very engaged in this for many years.
In later years, after retirement at age 59, he spent much of his time with the Mennonite Disaster Service helping people rebuild their homes after they were destroyed by natural disasters. He worked in: Fortuna, California after the earthquake in 1992, Hannibal on the Mississippi River, Missouri after extreme flooding in 1993 wiped out peoples’ homes, San Fernando, California after the earthquake in 1994, St. Thomas on the Virgin Islands after the hurricane in 1996. He also helped with maintenance on a school in Paraguay in 1995 and 1996.
Peter was very committed to his faith in God and was part of many missions’ efforts both locally and abroad to communicate the gospel. Peter spoke five languages.
Peter’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020, 12 pm, at The Clearbrook Mennonite Brethren Church, 2719 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford, BC. Please join the family for lunch at the church following the service. Donations to the MCC are most welcome.
