February 18, 1927 – January 12, 2020
Peter was born on a farm February 18, 1927 in Arnaud, Manitoba to Jacob and Lena Dirksen. The same year the family moved to Mullingar, Saskatchewan to continue farming. In 1936 the family moved to Abbotsford, BC. They bought 17.5 acres Trans Canada Highway (now South Fraser Way) and built a house. Here they raised 7 children; Lily, Jake, Helen, Peter, Erika, Henry and Mary. Over the next few years Pete and his brother Jake help their Dad clear the stumps/trees from the land with horses, hand saws, sweat and stumping powder.
The family attended the Clearbrook MB Church. In his teen years, Peter accepted Jesus as his Saviour and was baptized in the Church. It was there that he met Katie Barg. They married August 15, 1948. They were blessed with a family of five boys and one girl; Glen 1949, Ken 1951, Gary 1956, Lorin 1958, Mark 1960, and Myrna 1962.
Peter and Katie were Charter Members of the Bakerview MB church. Annual family vacations included camping at Okanagan Lake in Penticton, BC. Also family trips at school spring break were to Disneyland and Palm Springs, California.
His lifelong employment was driving truck. In retirement, Peter and Katie traveled North America by car. Peter enjoyed playing golf with his sons and friends.
Peter died peacefully with Katie and several family members at his side on January 12, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Katie, his children: Glen (Elaine), daughter-in-law Doris, Gary (Marlene), Lorin (Cecelia), Mark (Kim), Myrna (Al), 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son Ken in 1996 (truck accident).
The family is thankful for the spiritual and physical care given to Peter at the Menno Hospital.
Memorial Service will be January 20, 2020 at 11 am at Bakerview MB Church.
