PAYNE; Morris

Morris passed away peacefully at the Maple Hill Hospice in Langley at the age of 81. He follows his loving wife Jean, who left us three years ago and is survived by his daughter Heather MacAlister (Don); son Daniel (Dominique); grandchildren Katie, Kelsey, Zachary, Julianne and Mikaella. Born in Katrime, Manitoba, to John and Jenny Payne, Morris was one of seven children and is survived by his twin sister Grace. Leaving home as a teenager in 1952, Morris came to British Columbia in search of work and to make a life for himself. He first went to work on the log booms in logging camps and then moved into Line work. Morris was one of the pioneers that brought the High Voltage Tower Lines from the Great Northern Dams to the Fraser Valley. This was the first time that helicopters were used in Tower Construction and wire pulling. He was part of a group of men that set the standard for helicopter work regularly done by Linemen today. He not only worked in BC, but also south to California, and east to Ontario. He worked on transmission lines and the distribution system that brings the power to our homes.  On many occasions he was a crew lead and trained many apprentices who are now todays Linemen, including his son. As proud as Morris was of his profession, he loved his family even more deeply. He loved family get togethers and a home full of laughter, and full of pets. Active in sports himself, he became well known in the Abbotsford area through his hockey refereeing and baseball umpiring. The family would like to thank the staff at Langley Gardens, Langley Hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital, the Yale Road Centre and the Maple Hill Hospice.... all of whom, without exception, showed the patience and compassion that supported the quality of their care and allowed Morris the dignity and comfort he had earned from the life he led. A Memorial Service to celebrate Morris' life will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 1:30 pm at Henderson's Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC.
