Mary

Feb. 1, 1927 – June 25, 2006

It is with sadness that we say good-bye to our mother and grandmother. Mary Rennie pass-

ed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of June 25, 2006.

Alzheimer’s, a cruel and debilitating disease, robbed mom of the last 7 years of her life, but on Sunday morning, God called her home and we firmly believe she is once again singing the hymns she knew off by heart before the disease took over her life.

Mary is survived by her children Wayne (Jennifer), Gary (Flo), Joan (Bob) McGowan, John (Brenda), Nancy (Mike) Lang and David; 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Also, her brother, Edward, and her sisters Louise, Esther, Eva, and Miriam. Mary was predeceased by her husband Tom in 2003.

Mom was born in Laird, Saskatchewan to John and Maria Sawatzky. She was one of 12 children and grew up in a large family that was always short on money, but big on love. Mary came to BC as a young girl, married Tom Rennie and they settled on Matsqui Prairie to raise their six children. Mom’s life revolved around her family. Her children and grandchildren were very special to her. She had a passion for gardening and baking. Every spring mom planted a huge garden and reaped enough harvest to feed half of Matsqui Prairie. She spent days upon days every summer canning and freezing fruits and vegetables, and whoever happened to stop by for coffee never left empty handed! Mom was also an incredible baker – no one could bake homemade bread like mom. She loved her life down on the farm in Matsqui. But the disease was starting to slowly rob mom of her life and eventually dad had to make the very tough decision to sell their property and move into town. We all remember one of the saddest days of our lives when we got together for the final wiener roast in the back of mom and dad’s property. Dad left us in November 2003 and we take comfort knowing mom and dad are united again.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Winner, along with the staff at Worthington Pavilion, who cared for our mother with such tenderness and love. We also would like to acknowledge the special lady who was in the bed beside mom who would ring for help when mom couldn’t.
