April 25, 1928 - October 25, 2024

Mae Alecia Ellen Shugg (Guiltner) passed away peacefully at age 96.

Mae was an adventurer, athlete, artist, volunteer, and businesswoman. She was born in Irma, Alberta, one of 12 siblings. She was whip-smart at school and active in track, basketball, and baseball. At 17, she moved to Vancouver. She worked in the personnel office of the Hudson's Bay where she met Harold Shugg, the love of her life, who remained as smitten with her through 59 years of marriage as he was on the first day they met.

Mae and Hal had 3 wonderful children (Janet, Anne and Harold), 10 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. In the early years, Mae led the family while Hal travelled for work. As Hal would say: "Mae ran everything from finances to raising the children, to making all the correct decisions." After the kids were grown, they founded Shugg Agencies and sold jewellery wholesale until their retirement. Hal and Mae loved to travel together, especially to Maui.

Mae coached youth curling and curled well into her 80s. She helped found the North Shore Winter Club. She volunteered with Brownies, school, and sports for her children and grandchildren.

She was proud of her roots and spoke with deep love and gratitude about her father, Lionel, who cared for the children after her mother died when Mae was only five.

Mae kept a beautiful home and enjoyed many artistic hobbies, such as painting landscapes. Her fruit and vegetable garden in North Vancouver was bountiful. She could knit and would sew and design her own clothes. She taught three generations to make incredible pastry.

Mae was happiest when her home was full of her large family, laughing, drinking, and eating together. She requested no service, but instead one last gathering at the family home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
