Laurens (Larry) REID

August 17, 2005

Laurens (Larry) Vernon 1914 - 2005

Laurens (Larry) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at the age of 91 years. Predeceased by his sister Dorothea Moon and nephew Leslie Moon, he is lovingly remembered by his great nephew David (Beverly) Moon, David’s mother Ann and many relatives and friends. Born in Griswold, Manitoba, Larry grew up on the prairies before joining the Royal Navy and defending allied convoys crossing the Atlantic during WWII. After the war he obtained a Masters of Arts degree in Economics from UBC and went on to teach in Burnaby and Vancouver and then in Alameda, San Jose and San Fransico California. Following his teaching career, Larry retired to Bowen Island in the late ‘60s to build the home where he lived until just a few years ago. There he was editor and publisher of “The Undercurrent” a local newspaper still in circulation today. During this time he traveled the world with his beloved sister Dorothea, tended his gardens and wrote. Beyond his newspaper editorials, he was a prolific writer of poetry and a published author. Larry will always be remembered for his love of life, unique sense of humor and stirring views on political matters. In his own words, he was a “free thinker”.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff at MSA’s Cottage Pavillion where Larry lived his last years.
