February 7, 1952 – December 24, 2019
John Wai Chung Leung passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on December 24, 2019 after a 2 1/2 year battle with adrenal cancer.
He was born in Macau, China on February 7, 1952, the second eldest and only son of 6 children to Leung Sau Han and Leung Chin Lee. However he was raised in Hong Kong where he met his soulmate and life partner, Susanna, at age 18. Together they immigrated to Vancouver, BC, Canada in 1972.
He is a proud University of British Columbia Alumnus having graduated from their Faculty of Pharmacy in 1977. Thereafter, he began his career as a pharmacist having worked at independent drug stores in Squamish and Vancouver. He eventually settled in Abbotsford, BC where he became owner/pharmacist of Peoples Drug Mart, now known as Newgen PharmaChoice for the last 39 years. His store was a strong sense of pride for him. He loved serving his many loyal customers over the years and was a beloved leader in the community.
John had a passion for golf and music. He could play golf everyday if possible and even had 3 hole in ones over the years. He was a fan of the Beatles and loved playing the guitar and singing for friends and family. John was a charismatic individual with an infectious sense of humor who could make anyone feel instantly comfortable and connected to him. He was a loving and selfless husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be dearly missed by all. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed every moment.
John Leung is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susanna, his three children; Ben (Ly), Emily (Wiley), and Andrew, four grandchildren; Katelyn, Taylor, Noah, and Jamie, along with his five sisters; Frances (Simon), Lina (Bryn), Rita (Regis), Cecilia (Andre), and Michelle.
His Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 11 am at New Life Reformed Christian Church, 35270 Delair Road, Abbotsford, BC.
