John Walter Stonoski

October 24, 1937 – June 9, 2017


We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden, but peaceful passing of our beloved husband and father John, on Friday, June 9th at home surrounded by his family after a short illness. He will be deeply missed by Hilda, his loving wife of 51 years and their son Darren (Tracey); his sister Josephine Bourgeois, brother Ed (Beverly), sisters-in-law Elsie (Al) Giesbrecht, Ruth (Ron) Pilla, brother-in-law Richard Abfalter (Ludy) and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents John and Bernice and brother-in-law Joe Bourgeois. John was born in New Denver, BC and raised in the Nelson area. After high school he served with the R.C.A.F. for seven years attaining the rank of Flying Officer. Upon release he attended Notre Dame University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He joined the Canadian Penitentiary Service in 1967 serving as a Case Management Officer at Matsqui Institution, Abbotsford. In 1973 John was promoted to Warden, a position he held throughout the Pacific Region Institutions until his retirement in 1996. No service at the request of the family. A Celebration of Life will take place for family and close friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Big Brothers of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford Branch.
