HANON, John Christian

passed away Nov. 11 at the age of 71 in Abbotsford after a brief illness. John was born in Edmonton, AB on Nov. 19, 1938 and attended Strathcona Composite High School. He enlisted in the Canadian army in 1956 and served as a U.N. peacekeeper in the Congo in 1962. After his military service, he worked for B.C. Tel for 32 years until his retirement in 1995. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Pamela (nee Tock), his five children James (Denise), Andrew (Sakuntla), Sarah, Rachel McAvoy and Matthew; eight grandchildren, Phoebe, Ingval, Courtney Nelson (Daniel), Lauren, Kimberly, Naomi, Alex McAvoy and Joshua McAvoy. He is predeceased by his father Harris, mother Clara, brothers Henry, Ingval, Douglas and Alvin, and sister Margaret. A memorial service in John’s honour will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Elks Hall in Aldergrove, B.C., 27309 Fraser Hwy., Pastor Joe Kelder officiating. Throughout his life John gave generously of both his time and finances to many charitable groups. He can be honoured with gifts in his memory to the B.C. Lung Association.
