Joan Anita Miller

December 13, 1928 ~ February 2, 2017

Joan Anita Miller of Mission, BC passed away suddenly on February 2, 2017 at the age of 88 years with her family at her side. She is survived by her sister Dorothy Newfield of Calgary, three children Tanice (Kirk), Pamela (Will) and David (Wendy) and three grandchildren Amy (Chris), Benjamin and Nicholas. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Telford Miller in 2012, her father Elmer Peacock in 1971, mother Mildred Peacock (nee Dowker) in 1976 and brother Murray Peacock in 2005. Joan was born on December 13th, 1928 in Boissevain, Manitoba. She was the second of three children born to Elmer and Mildred Peacock. Her early years were filled with work and play on the farm. She moved as a teenager into town to care for her grandmother while attending school. In 1950 she graduated from Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in Winnipeg Manitoba earning honors for proficiency in obstetrics. Here she met her future husband and they married on September 29th, 1950 at Riverview United Church in Winnipeg. They raised three children and worked together as a nurse and General Practitioner for over nine years in the rural towns of Morden, Roland and Oakville, Manitoba. In 1960 Telford decided to become a General Surgeon so the family moved to Edmonton, Alberta and subsequently Fort St. John, BC in 1965, Fort Langley, BC in 1976 and finally settling in Mission, BC in 1980. She particularly enjoyed celebrating holidays, vacationing in Naramata with her family and attending her grandchildren’s activities. We will miss our mother; her spirit, her strength and her love for her family. We’d like to acknowledge the wonderful care given by Dr. Peter Barnsdale and her caregivers from Classic Life Care; Gloria, Kiran and Mia. A Memorial Service will be held at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home 7386 Horne St, Mission, BC and officiated by Rev. Tim Bowman on Saturday, February 18th, 2017 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.
