Joan Burns of Abbotsford, BC passed away on January 30, 2015 at the age of 88 with her daughters by her side at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Joan will be greatly missed and is lovingly remembered by her daughters Valerie and Vanessa, as well as her many nieces, nephews and cousins in England, Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. Joan was predeceased by her husband Anthony (Tony) Burns (1986), brothers George (Trude) Southgate (1995) in England, Leonard (Ruth) Southgate (2014) in Tasmania, Stanley Southgate (2008) in England, Cyril Southgate (2014) in England, Frank (Marion) Southgate (2009) in New Zealand and sister Marjorie (Dan) Clothier (2013) in Australia. Joan was born in Essex, England the second youngest of seven children of George H. Southgate and Mabel A. Southgate. Joan married Anthony (Tony) Burns in London, England in 1946 and came to Canada as a Military wife with Tony and her daughter Valerie in 1953. Joan and Tony lived in Ontario for many years where their second daughter Vanessa was born. While Tony was in the Military they travelled widely and were stationed in Ontario (Petawawa and London), Antwerp, Belgium, Viersen, Germany and Chilliwack, BC. Joan loved animals, the sea, gardening, music and dance. She performed with a local choir for a number of years. At Joan's request there will be no service. Donations may be made in her name to the Abbotsford S.P.C.A. or Canadian Wildlife Federation.
