Jean Dorothy COLMAN

Jean Dorothy COLMAN

Jean Dorothy Colman (nee Coleman) late of Chilliwack, B.C., passed away peacefully surrounded by family on October 30, 2007 at Chilliwack Hospital. Jean was born July 8, 1931 in Lewisham, London, England. She is survived by her five children: Guy (Wendy) Colman, Carolyn (John) Moores, Marc (Teresa) Colman, Janine (Brad) Morris, Jon (Cheryl) Colman; 8 grandchildren: Delton, Adam, Melanie, Jennifer, Amber, Brittany, Brandon, Hailey, and 4 grandchildren, her sister Jill Borrows, and brother John Coleman of England, and sister-in-law Dolly Holmes. She was predeceased by her husband Graham Colman on November 1, 1997. Mom loved and was proud of her children and grandchildren. She was always interested in their activities and lives.

Mom grew up in London, England during the Second World War and survived the blitz. As a young woman she attended Whitelands College in London and graduated with her diploma in teaching. After college, mom traveled extensively throughout Europe and was asked to act as a diplomat for the first International Youth and Educators Symposium in Germany after the war.

Mom came to Canada in 1957 to teach in Prince Rupert, B.C. She met dad and they were married at St. Andrews church in Prince Rupert on January 10, 1958. Soon after the family moved to Vancouver. Mom continued to work at teaching jobs in Vancouver and Coquitlam but eventually she switched to retail. Some of her jobs were working at United Cigars, Woodward’s, Eaton’s, and eventually started her 35 years with Woolco and presently Wal-Mart stores. Wal-Mart became mom’s second family. She was known as “Mom” amongst the employees. She loved the relationships she had with fellow employees, patrons, and most of all, the business side of retail and fashion. Many of mom’s fondest memories of the Woolco days were her organizing fashion shows for the store. She also really enjoyed watching new Wal-Mart stores open and was involved in organizing and developing the ladies wear in the Chilliwack store when it opened.

Mom was a breast cancer survivor and worked full time at Wal-Mart right up until her recent stay in Chilliwack General Hospital. Mom loved antiques, a good magazine, Lady Diana memorabilia, shopping and anything fashionable. She loved meeting people and having conversations about where they were from and what they did for a living.

A celebration of Jean’s Life will be held on November 10, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home, (45865 Hocking Ave. Chilliwack, B.C.) Pastor Lorne Lueck officiating. Followed by a tea at the Masonic Hall (45905 Hocking Ave. Chilliwack, B.C.)
