March 14, 1924 - October 13, 2019
On Sunday, October 13, 2019 at the age of 95 Jakob (Jake) Krahn passed away peacefully at the Cascade Hospice with close family by his side. Jake was born on March 14, 1924 in Friedensfeld, Ukraine to Bernhard and Margaretha Krahn. Jake was one of six children. Near the end of WW2 Jake was able to retreat from Russia alongside the Germans. He landed in Canada in 1948 and married Helen Grunau on October 3 whom he had met in Munich shortly after being baptized in a refugee camp. After moving to a house on Evans Rd. they had their first child Ernie (1950). Jake eventually got a job in construction and it was here where he lost his eye in a workplace accident during construction of the Eaton's store. Jake started his own construction company after this as no one was willing to hire him. During this time he moved to Storey Ave. where Jim (1954), David (1957), Walter (1959), and Dennis (1966) were born. Jake and Helen made a couple more moves and eventually built their dream home on Wells Rd. Jake enjoyed music, fishing, and playing card and board games. He is predeceased by his loving wife Helen who lost her battle to Cancer in 2006 and his second oldest son Jim who lost his battle to cancer in 2010. He is survived by his other four sons Ernie (Betti), David (Lana), Walter (Raelene), and Dennis (Lydia) as well as his many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and other relatives and friends. A special thanks to Carol, Marlene, Sue and Diane for the care they gave Jake over the past several years and to Dr. MacKenzie. Sadly Jake, we all will miss you, your joy, and your singing for life. Even now we hear your blessed farewell as you've repeated so many times...
"Be safe, goodbye, don't do anything I wouldn't do,
that should give you a little room to live anyways..."
Jake's celebration of life will be held at 11 am at Eden Mennonite church on Chilliwack Central Rd on Nov. 2. For online condolences please visit www.myalternatives.ca
