January 5, 1936 - November 12, 2022
In loving memory ~
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ian MacAlpine on November 12, 2022.
Ian led a life well lived. At the age of 12, he and two friends were the youngest publishers in Canada when they created a weekly newspaper in Ocean Falls, BC. This sparked his career in journalism which took him from Saskatchewan to Victoria to Vancouver. While reporting was his passion for many years, he changed course and went to law school. Ian was called to the bar in 1972 and opened his practice in Abbotsford. In 1979 he was appointed as a Provincial Court Judge and retired from the bench in 2005. Ian spent his retirement between Abbotsford and his beloved cabin on Saltspring Island, where he was at his happiest spending time with family and friends.
Ian is survived by his wife of 64 years, Merlyn, his daughter Karen and husband Lon Fraser, daughter Cathy and husband Shawn McCormack. Son Doug MacAlpine and wife Lisa. Also missing him are his grandchildren Brad (Shar) Fraser, Keith Fraser, Shannon (Greg) Cavanagh, Dan (Becca) MacAlpine, Leanne (Jason) Swaan and Shawna McCormack. He was predeceased by his parents Milton and Dorothy MacAlpine, sister Anne MacAlpine and granddaughter Cheryl McCormack.
There will be a private family service at the cabin in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
